Barbara makes art out of gourds. “I love starting from the seeds and working through the finished product. Not a lot of artists can say that they work the whole process.”
She learned from books “and a lot of trial and error, mostly learning from mistakes,” and building her own style and processes over time.
In the garden, she uses pantyhose to suspend the gourds while they are growing, dries each gourd over the winter, then gently sands the surfaces before she can begin the intricate work of cutting, etching and painting her designs. Her work can be functional or decorative, from gourd boxes to bird feeders to ornaments, and can be found at Charles Town Farmers Market over the summer months .
